Do Great Things  -  Join Air Cadets

Your journey starts with submitting an application to join.

Air Cadets is a FREE youth organization. That's right, it does not cost anything to join Air Cadets. Each cadet is provided with a uniform and the materials they require to participate in the program.  Extracurricular activities like band, biathlon, ground school, and more are included. Even flight training to get your pilot's license is included in the program for those who work hard and qualify.

How is this possible when every youth program costs hundreds or thousands of dollars to join? Air Cadets is funded by the Government of Canada, generous sponsors, and parent fundraisers and volunteers.

There are few participation awards in Cadets. Participants are expected to work hard, stretch themselves, work collaboratively with their fellow Cadets, help their community, know when to follow, and learn how to lead. Promotions, awards, and opportunities come from hard work and achievement. Cadets will help prepare you for tomorrow and success in life.

Time Commitment

The 699 Jasper Place Squadron parades every Wednesday evening, September through June, at the West Edmonton Baptist Church between 6:30 and 9:30 PM. Cadets are expected to attend regularly and inform staff in advance if they are unable.

Some mandatory and optional activities take place on Monday evenings, weekends, or other days. Cadets who are unable to attend such mandatory activities, or optional activities they have signed up for, are also expected to inform staff in advance if they are unable to attend.

Cadets who miss multiple days without contact or justification may be struck from enrollment. The Squadron has limited available space and often has a waiting list for individuals looking to join. It is unfair to exclude those who seeking to join, waiting for others who waste and squander their opportunity.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for membership a cadet must:

  1. Be not less than 12 years old, but not have reached his/her 19th birthday

  2. Not belong to another cadet Corps or Squadron

  3. Be medically, physically, and psychologically fit to join cadets and participate in related training and/or activities

  4. Be of good moral character

  5. Be acceptable to the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Commanding Officer.

Cadets with medical/physical conditions are eligible to enrol but must understand that they may be excluded from attending some or any training due to the medical condition. For a cadet who has such conditions, a Detailed Health Questionnaire must be completed.  It is mailed confidentially to the Regional Cadet Medical Officer at the Regional Cadet Support Unit Northwest (RCSU (NW)) in Winnipeg, Manitoba for their approval. Application packages are available on the website as well from the Administration Officer.

Transferring Squadrons

Sometimes families and their cadets move, but that does not mean you have to leave cadets. Transferring to your new local squadron is an option worth exploring. If you are looking to potentially transfer to the 699 Jasper Place Squadron, please send an email to cadetnews699@yahoo.ca with your contact information. One of the Squadron staff will contact you to discuss your interest in transferring.

Join as an Officer or Volunteer

Cadets relies on Cadet Instructor Cadre Officers and volunteers to operate. If you are an adult who is interested help run or support Canada's premier youth organization, then there are several ways you could contribute below.

CIC OFFICER

The Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) consists of specially trained part-time members of the Canadian Forces. CIC officers are responsible for cadet training, supervision, and administration. CIC officers are important figures in the life of a cadet. Many CIC officers were once cadets themselves, but this is not a prerequisite.

CIVILIAN VOLUNTEER

Volunteers give their time in a variety of ways, for example: running the canteen, driving Cadets to and from events, coordinating a mess dinner, helping with special events, assisting with summer course selections and promotion interviews, being a band master, a Web Master, a photographer or a media relations representative for the Squadron and so on. They want the Squadron to be successful and to be part of making that happen. This is a great way for parents to give back and support the organization and their cadet.
